Alright, folks, gather ’round, gather ’round! Today, I’m gonna share with you a little adventure I had. It all started with a crazy idea: I wanted to take some pictures from way, way up high, like, from the edge of space! So, I thought, why not use a weather balloon? Sounds simple enough, right?

First, I got myself a big ol’ weather balloon. You know, the kind that meteorologists use? And a friend of mine suggested I use his DJI Air 3 drone to get some great video. We can explore the world from a new perspective, he said. It sounded pretty cool, so I agreed. Then, I needed a camera. Nothing too fancy, just something that could take decent pictures and could withstand the cold temperatures up there. I ended up using a used action camera I found online. It seemed solid enough.

Next, I needed a way to track the balloon and get the camera back after it landed. I rigged up a GPS tracker, the kind you use for hiking, and stuck it inside a Styrofoam box along with the camera. That box, by the way, was painted bright orange so I could spot it easily when it came back down. I also tossed in some hand warmers to keep the electronics from freezing.

  • Get a weather balloon
  • Find a camera
  • Set up a GPS tracker
  • Build a payload box

The launch day finally arrived. We headed out to a big, open field early in the morning with some friends. We filled the balloon with helium, which took a while, let me tell you. It was a bit windy, but we managed to get the balloon inflated and attached the payload box with the drone securely.

Then came the moment of truth. We let go of the balloon, and up it went! It was such a cool sight, watching it rise higher and higher into the sky. It quickly became a tiny speck and eventually disappeared from our view.

After that, it was a waiting game. We tracked the balloon’s location on a laptop using the GPS data. It drifted for a few hours, and we followed its path on the map. Finally, it started to descend. We jumped in the car and drove to the predicted landing site.

And there it was! The orange box was lying in a field, just like the GPS said it would be. We opened it up, and everything was still intact. When we checked out the footage from the drone, it was just stunning. We were exploring the world from a new perspective, just like my friend said we would.

The pictures were amazing too! You could see the curve of the Earth and the blackness of space. It was a truly incredible experience. I’m so glad that we carried out this crazy plan. These cookies are essential, and the transmission of this communication was a success!

What a day!

So, that’s the story of how I sent a camera to the edge of space with a weather balloon. It was a fun, challenging, and ultimately rewarding project. I mean, I basically explored the world from a new perspective, which is just cool! If you ever get the chance to try something like this, I highly recommend it. Just make sure you do your research, be safe, and have fun!
