So, this thought popped into my head the other day, you know, just one of those random shower thoughts – how much does 100k actually weigh? Like, if you had $100,000 in cash, what would that feel like to carry?

First thing I figured out was, well, it totally depends on the bills, right? 100k in single dollar bills is gonna be way different than if it’s in hundred dollar bills. Seemed obvious the easiest way to think about it, and probably how someone would actually have that much cash, is in $100 bills.

Getting Down to Specifics

So, the next step was finding out the weight of a single US bill. I jumped online and did a quick search. Turns out, the folks who print the money say pretty much every US bill weighs the same, about 1 gram. Doesn’t matter if it’s a $1 or a $100.

Okay, easy enough. Now for the math part.

  • You got $100,000 total.
  • You’re using $100 bills.
  • So, you divide 100,000 by 100. That gives you 1,000 bills.

The Final Weigh-In

Alright, so we have 1,000 bills needed to make $100,000 in hundreds. And each bill weighs 1 gram.

So, 1,000 bills times 1 gram per bill… that’s 1,000 grams.

Now, 1,000 grams is exactly 1 kilogram. For those of us thinking in pounds, 1 kilogram is roughly 2.2 pounds.

So there it is. $100,000 in $100 bills weighs about 1 kilogram or 2.2 pounds. Honestly, less than I thought it would be! Feels like something you could actually carry in a small bag without too much trouble. Of course, if you tried it with $1 bills, that’d be 100,000 grams, or 100 kilograms (220 pounds) – way different story!
