So last Tuesday I realized I needed helium tanks for my niece’s birthday party. Balloons everywhere, right? Figured it’d be cheap. Man, was I wrong. Here’s exactly what went down.

The “Quick Trip” That Wasn’t

Grabbed my keys thinking it’s a 10-minute job. Walked into PartyPalace first. Saw shiny tanks near the entrance – score! But no price tags. Asked the guy:

  • Me: “How much for the small helium tank?”
  • Him: “Starts at $30. Plus deposit.”

Deposit? For what? Felt like ordering fries and getting charged for the wrapper.

Phone Detective Mode

Called five other shops while standing there. “Basic” prices were all over the map:

  • Discount Gas Hub: “$27.99”
  • Balloons-R-Us: “$32.50 plus hazmat fee”
  • Tank Express: “$25! …plus $10 handling”

Handling. Like someone gently cradled the tank? Give me a break.

Finally Buying One (And The Pain)

Went back to PartyPalace ’cause it was closest. Grabbed that $30 tank. Ring-up shocked me:

  • Tank: $30
  • “Tank Recovery Fee”: $15
  • “Gas Surcharge”: $4.50
  • “Admin Cost”: $2.99

Over $50 bucks?! My card machine beeped angrily. Asked why so many fees. Cashier shrugged: “Corporate stuff.” Super helpful.

Returning It? More Surprises!

After the party, hauled the empty tank back. Thought I’d get that $15 “deposit” back. Nope. Clerk said:

  • “Recovery Fee” isn’t refundable.
  • Needed original receipt (thank god I kept it).
  • Only had a 7-day return window!

Felt scammed. Walked out grumbling. Ended up paying like $40 just to blow up $10 worth of balloons. Total joke. Next time? I’m blowing them up myself. Cheaper and no hidden crap.
